Questions from Math’s Exemplar

Q 1 Sana and Fatima participated in an apple race. The race was conducted in 6 parts.In the first part , sana won by 10 sec.In the second part she lost by 1 min (60 sec), then won by 20 seconds in the third part and lost by 25 seconds in the fourth part, she lost by 37 seconds in the fifth part and won by 12 seconds in the last part, Who won the race finally ? (Q130)

Ans:-     Time taken by sana in apple race (in 6 parts) (Won +, Loss -)
1 min= 60 sec
=+10-60+20-25-37+12
=-80 sec ( 1 min 20 sec)
Fatima won the race finally by 1 min 20 sec.

Q 2 In a test , +3 marks are given for every correct answers and -1 marks are given for every incorrect answers.Sona attempted all the questions and scored +20 marks though she got 10 correct answers.
i)                    How many incorrect answers has she attempted?
ii)                  How many questions was given in the test .(Q132)

 Ans       Marks for correct answers = +3
                Marks for incorrect answers =-1
Marks scored =+20
Marks scored by correct answers =10 x 3 = 30 marks
Marks reduced by incorrect answers = 10 x 1 = 10 marks
i)                    Total incorrect questions=10
ii)                  Total questions given in the test = 30

Q 3 In a true – false test containing 50 questions , a student is to be awarded 2 marks for every correct answers and -2 marks for every incorrect answers and 0 for not supplying any answer. If yash scored 94 marks in the test, What are the possibilities of his marking correct or wrond answers.Q(133)

Ans;-     Since yash scored 94 marks in the test. So minimum correct answers = 94/2 =47
Possibility of correct =47
Possibility of incorrect = 03

Q 4 A multistory building has 25 floors above the ground level each of height 5 m .It also has 3 floors in the basement each of height 5m.A lift in building moves at a rate of 1m/s.If a man starts from 50m above the ground , how long will it take him to reach at 2nd floor of basement? ( Q 134)

Ans:-     No of floors above ground level=25
Height of each level = 5 m
Total height above ground level= 25 x 5
= 125 m
No of floors in the basement =3
Total height in the basement = 3 x 5
=15 m
Rate of lift = 1 m/s
Distance covered by man = 50m(above)+10m(basement i.e upto 2nd floor)
= 60m
So time taken by man to reach at 2nd floor of basement when he starts from 50 m above the ground is 60 sec.

Q5 Taking today as zero on the number line , if the day before yesterday is 17 January , What is the date 3 days after tomorrow? (Q135)
Ans:-     Day before yesterday = 17 Jan
Yesterday= 18 Jan
Today= 19 Jan
Tomorrow =20 Jan
3 Days after tomorrow = 20+3
=23 Jan

Q6  The highest point measured above sea level is the summit of Mt.everest which is 8,848 m above sea level and the lowest point is challenger deep at the bottom of Mariana Trench which is 10911m below sea level .What is the vertical distance between these two points.? (Q136)

Ans:-     Distance above sea level = 8848 m
Distance below sea level= 10911 m
Total vertical distance between these two points = 8848+10911
= 19759 m

Q7 You are at an elevation 380 m above sea level as you start a motor ride. During the ride , your elevation changes by the following meters . 540m,-268m,116m,-152m,490m,-844m,94m. What is your elevation relative to the sea level at the end of the ride? (Q123)

Ans:-     Elevation at the end of the ride
380+540-268+116-152+490-844+94 =356 m
